You bring me up to get me down well i’m sick and i’m tired of this onestreet town i tried to be nice, i played the fool now nothin’s gonna make me lose some cool you don’t need the friends when you got the drugs they’re just piggies in the blanket in the bed like bugs now i lock that door and i stay at home i disconnect that telephone, because
because the coldhearted chills won’t let me alone
I don’t believe in no cynic’s creed i just believe in death and greed i don’t love the children, i don’t love the bums i don’t love justice and it never comes now if you want emotion, got to pay the price and no i don’t love money but it sure is nice i’m disconnectin that telephone singin and dancin to the gramophone, because
because the blackhearted blues won’t let me alone
I feel good and i feel fine and i ain’t gonna make your troubles mine i don’t burn and rave, i don’t weep and moan i got the coldhearted chills to keep me alone (come on)
Words by Henry Wilson Music by Pop Empire { Cameron Cochran, Andy Jody, Henry Wilson }
Come all you goodtime people while i’ve got money to spend: for tomorrow might be monday and i’ll neither have a dollar nor a friend
when i had plenty of money, good people, then my friends were all standing around: but as soon as my pocketbook is empty not a friend on this earth can be found
Last time i seen my little woman, good people, she had a wineglass in her hand: she’s drinkin down her troubles with a lowdown sorry man
all around this old jailhouse you see me, good people, forty dollars won’t pay my fine: corn whisky has surrounded my body–poor boy– pretty womens is troublin my mind
Well i’ve gambled all round Kentucky, good people, gambled half my way through Spain: now I’m goin back to Ohio gonna play my last card game
I’m better than i get but i ain’t got nothing yet ’cause i ain’t got a cent in the land of the free
well, i work so goddamn hard and try to pay my rent i swear i had the check i don’t know where it went got it and it’s gone, all in a flash got it and it’s gone and it’s all in cash
God help me if you can, but if you can’t just let me be ’cause i ain’t got a cent in the land of the free
Jesus sent his people out in the land said you will be known by the works of your hand but in this country they just don’t give a damn– i’m just fingerprints and numbers to old Uncle Sam
almighty Dollar don’t abide no crime in love’s supreme justice gotta do your time young man ain’t worth much in this world today old man’s broker than two feet of clay
dig my grave with a silver spade and lay me down with a golden chain lay my corporation in six foot of ground poor man dig a hole to put the rich man down
i didn’t say i was a millionaire, but if i was i woulda spent it all ’cause i ain’t got a cent in the land of the free
It’s been a while since we last updated this popempire.com website. A lot has transpired. I don’t suppose it’s necessary to recap all of our summertime adventures, though I do want to thank everybody for the wonderful shows we’ve had over the last few months. In particular, thanks to Jai All Day for hosting us with Vacation and Sacred Spirits on her rooftop. Thanks to Aaron Glorius for working hard with us in the underground laboratory to come up with a collaborative set for Turntables n Snares. Most notably, an immense thanks to Ben Sloan, with whom we had the great pleasure of playing a few shows (as you can sortof see in the picture above, @ the Drinkery with DJ Gerald and Lions Rampant). Thanks everybody else, too. I really mean it.
Well, we’ve been practicing very hard, Cameron and I. We are having goodtimes and feeling the itch to get out and do more shows. At the moment, however, we don’t have any concrete plans for such until January, when we’ll be doing a residency at Motr Pub. We’ve been doing a bit of recording — we are planning to split a 7″ single with Ultra Pulverize from Louisville — more on that later. Also I bought some new gadgets, which I’m always excited about.
In short, that’s what’s up with us. How are you? I’ll be posting more soon. Stay in touch, dear people of the Internet.
We have been working diligently in our new studio recreating our live set and working on preproduction for our second LP. We are going to start performing this new material in May. Friday, May 20th we will be playing with COLD CAVE (who is currently on tour with THE KILLS) at MOTR PUB in Cincinnati, OH. We will have a couple in town dates in June and July and then we will get out of town in the fall.
THE RECORDING LABEL is a collective of sorts that Henry and I have been working on. It currently exists as a website where you can download LP’s for free in MP3 and WAVE format. This is all done with permission by the artists. All the music is curated (and in some cases produced) by POP EMPIRE. We are working with some friends of ours to help make THE RECORDING LABEL exist outside the digital world as well as serve the digital community better. Follow the link in the sidebar to the right if you would like to check it out.
Drop us a line if you have any questions or ideas. We look forward to seeing you all very soon.
